I don't want no scrub.

For those of you who never got a chance to hear our fourth show of the semester, Folktronik 7x04, you should know that I showcased a cover of TCL's "No Scrubs" that was quite choice. The cover was done by a group called Bastille and featured instrumentals from The xx's Angels. Allegedly, The xx enjoyed the cover so much that they played it live on tour themselves. South by Free Shows [2013]

I haven't had a huge amount of time to devote to making my free show list this year, but I will do my best to provide you with as many free shows as I can. This list contains all of my favorite bands playing at SXSW 2013. If you know of any free shows that aren't already listed, or if you would like to be made an editor of the list, feel free to leave a comment or contact me directly. I'd like to thank Ronnie and Patty for helping track down free shows and contribute to this list.

Something like Mount Kimbie

Ever since I first discovered Mount Kimbie, the group who defined the Post Dubstep (whatever that means) genre, I've been determined to find a group with a similar sound. Finally, after years waiting to stumble upon something, I've finally found a group that sounds a lot like Mount Kimbie: Maribou State.

Maribou State's use of syncopated acoustic samples, warm, driving bass, and unintelligible vocal samples - treating the vocal track as if it's another percussive instrument - are all qualities I only find in my favorite electronic tracks, and if you're anything like me, you'll love their remix of Ultraista's "Gold Dayzz," posted below. Do yourself a favor and listen to the song with headphones or a decent sound system. If you try to listen on laptop speakers, or, dare I say, a cell phone speaker, you'll miss out of most of song and the melody.

Intro Track from Folktronik 7x04

As promised, here's the song I opened today's show with. Evidently, Empyrean has changed his name to "Dulcimer."
The song is available for download (name your own price) HERE.

STRFKR

With the release of the new Starfucker album only weeks away, it's about time for me to start building hype for the new album. Us folks at Folktronik/KANM just received a promotional copy of Miracle Mile, and believe me when I tell you that this album will get a lot of airplay. The track below, Say to You, is my current favorite song on the album, but Atlantis is a close second.

On a slightly unrelated note, Starfucker will be playing a show with Blackbird Blackbird in Austin, Thursday, March 7, and I encourage everyone in a 200 mile radius to attend. I'll be there.

Torres

It's been a while since I've discovered good new artists in anything other than the electronic realm, so I am excited to present to you a great new contemporary folk/alternative artist: Torres.
